Meshtastic caps every message at a maximum of 7 hops — after that it's gone, no matter how close the recipient actually is. And that budget burns fast: any node not set to Client_Mute rebroadcasts everything it hears by default, chewing through your message's hop count on relays that have nothing to do with your conversation.
Meshtastic spreads messages by having each node repeat what it hears. That works fine for a handful of devices — at real-world scale it means collisions, airtime congestion, and packets that quietly never arrive.
Meshtastic doesn't hold a message for you while you're offline. If your phone or node isn't listening at the exact moment the packet passes through, it's already retried its handful of times and moved on — there's nothing waiting for you when you come back.

A couple of things happen the first time you open MeshHub — here's what to expect.
1. Your identity is created automatically. The first time you launch MeshHub, it generates your private cryptographic identity on the device — this is your address on the network. Nothing personal is involved: no phone number, no email, no account.
2. Tap Announce. Having an identity isn't the same as being reachable — the Reticulum network doesn't know you exist yet. Tap the Announce button inside the app to broadcast your presence so other nodes can discover you. Do this once when you're new to the network, and again any time you add a new interface or device.
3. Connect your hardware. MeshHub can bridge all three mesh networks into one inbox at the same time — connect a Meshtastic radio, a MeshCore node, and an RNode (or other Reticulum interface), and messages from all three show up in the same place.
4. Share your LXMF address. Once you've tapped Announce, you have an LXMF address — think of it like a phone number, except nobody assigns it, nothing is tied to your identity, and no company keeps a directory of it. Share your address with anyone and they can message you directly. Give someone their address (or have them share it with you), and you can message them directly too — no group, server, or third party required, just a direct line between two devices.
Here's what's actually happening, and the right way to close MeshHub so it doesn't happen again.
Good news — as of v1.1.0, MeshHub has a built-in shutdown button right in the app's top bar. Tap it, confirm, and it closes everything cleanly — no digging through Android settings required. The guide below is the manual method, still handy on older versions or if you'd rather use it.
MeshHub works hard behind the scenes to keep a steady link to your radios — Reticulum, Meshtastic, or MeshCore — even while you're doing something else on your phone. To do that job well, it keeps a small process alive in the background even after you swipe the app away, quietly holding the connection open rather than letting it drop and reconnect over and over.
The catch: swiping the app away doesn't always fully close that background process. So when you tap MeshHub open again, the screen you see can load before it's finished re-linking to that still-running background piece — and for a moment, it looks like everything's disconnected, even though the radio link never actually dropped. It's a quirk shared by plenty of apps that keep a live connection running in the background, not just MeshHub.
The manual fix takes ten seconds: press and hold the MeshHub icon, tap App info, then Force stop. That fully clears the background process instead of leaving it half-alive. Reopen MeshHub right after, and it reconnects clean, no ghost session left behind.
